An Historic Sites and Monuments Board of Canada plaque in front of this building at 14 Elm Street has this to say:

Painter, designer, and poet, J.E.H. MacDonald was a founding member of the Group of Seven and a key figure in the emergence of a national style of painting the Canadian landscape. A talented graphic designer of Canadian motifs, he also painted the farmlands of southern Ontario, the rich autumn colours of Algoma, the shores of Nova Scotia, and the majestic Rocky Mountains. A leading member of the 1988. Arts and Letters Club, MacDonald was an idealist who fostered the growth of Canadian culture in all its manifestations and inspired a generation of students at the Ontario College of Art.
